PRIMING |
The carrying over of water, with the steam, from the
boiler, as into the cylinder. |

FLOAT |
The hollow, metallic ball of a self-acting faucet, which
floats upon the water in a cistern or boiler. |

SCALE |
An incrustation deposit on the inside of a vessel in which
water is heated, as a steam boiler. |

FURRING |
A deposit from water, as on the inside of a boiler;
also, the operation of cleaning away this deposit. |

STANDPIPE |
A supply pipe of sufficient elevation to enable the
water to flow into the boiler, notwithstanding the pressure of the
steam. |

FEED |
The supply of material to a machine, as water to a steam
boiler, coal to a furnace, or grain to a run of stones. |

INDICATOR |
A pressure gauge; a water gauge, as for a steam boiler;
an apparatus or instrument for showing the working of a machine or
moving part |

FOAM |
To form foam, or become filled with foam; -- said of a steam
boiler when the water is unduly agitated and frothy, as because of
chemical action. |

INCRUSTATION |
A crust or hard coating of anything upon or within a
body, as a deposit of lime, sediment, etc., from water on the inner
surface of a steam boiler. |

WATER GAUGE |
An instrument for measuring or ascertaining the depth or
quantity of water, or for indicating the height of its surface, as in
the boiler of a steam engine. See Gauge. |

VAPORIZATION |
The act or process of vaporizing, or the state of
being converted into vapor; the artificial formation of vapor;
specifically, the conversion of water into steam, as in a steam boiler. |

TUBE |
A small pipe forming part of the boiler, containing water and
surrounded by flame or hot gases, or else surrounded by water and
forming a flue for the gases to pass through. |

DIP |
To take out, by dipping a dipper, ladle, or other
receptacle, into a fluid and removing a part; -- often with out; as, to
dip water from a boiler; to dip out water. |

PRIME |
To work so that foaming occurs from too violent
ebullition, which causes water to become mixed with, and be carried
along with, the steam that is formed; -- said of a steam boiler. |
